Lions at Work!

The Lions Club of Lara continues its Community Connection by doing what Lions do best....... turning sausages at a BBQ! Our 2017 golf day at the Elcho Park Golf Club held on October 8th is pictured below.

Trots Night 2016

The money raised from our annual trots night raises thousands of dollars for Camp Licola which rins camps for disadvantaged children.

(And everyone had an enjoyable time and a good meal to boot!)

Youth of the Year

This year's competition revealed some very tallented kids.  It encourages children to improve their language skills and looks great on their rèsumè after they finish school.

Peace Poster & School Grant

The Lions Club of Lara continues its Community Connection action with two events at the local Lara Primary School.

Each year, the Club holds its own local Peace Poster competition amongst the three Lara Primary Schools using the International Peace Poster annual theme. By keeping the competition local, we are able to use normal everyday A3 paper and be able to give prizes to winning entries from the two runner up schools and a bicycle to the overall winner of the winning school. This keeps the interest way up there due to an annual bicycle winner every year all sponsored by the Lions!

(Lions Dennis Clarke, Dennis Grant, Bill Berkeley with Peace Poster prize winner with his bicycle.)

The Lions Club of Lara also offers an annual grant of up to $1,500 each to two schools on an annual rotational basis to enable all schools and kindergartens to benefit.

This year the Lara Primary School used its grant to help purchase a Shade Sail for its play area. The City of Greater Geelong also put forward funding to assist with this project.

Network Meeting

The Lions Club of Lara held a community network meeting for its October Dinner Meeting/Dine Out with invited Community Groups attending to discuss projects and ideas.

Attendees included our local Councillor from the City of Greater Geelong, Lara RSL Sub Branch, Rotary Club of Lara, Lara Sporting Club, Lara Fire Brigade, Lara Masonic Lodge, Lara Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Lara Woodworkers, Township of Lara Care Group, Geelong Cemeteries Trust, Lara Community Centre and the Lara CWA.

(2013-14) President Peter Kuchenmeister commenced the evening with a short preamble advising everyone that each group will give a short background of their particular community group refering to what they do and are doing. Then it was up to individual members to liaise with each other with the hope that alliances and partnerships will form to enhance the communty.

An idea to make the groups supply a representative to form an informal quarterly community meeting, possibly at the beginning of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter with the sitting local Councillor to chair will facilitate communication between the Council and represenatatives of the township is being put forward for comment by the groups/organisations.

Building Partnerships

The Lions Club of Lara was approached by St Laurence Park to form another partnership this time to build a BBQ for a new Alfresco area for the Park's residents.

Lion member Mark McKenney assembled the BBQ and St Laurence organised the electrical work.

Mark then designed and riveted the bench tops and legs together, then bolted and attached it to the BBQ.

Luke Allen of Enterprise Special Projects Lara, sourced, folded and welded it ready for Mark to assemble to the BBQ.

The project did not incur any costs for labour or materials to St Laurence or the Club.
